14 best alcohol-free beers to rival the real thing

'In our taste test, we looked for beers that actually tasted like beer, and which give you the enjoyable experience and satisfying depth of flavour that you’re used to, minus the alcohol. Body is important too; we’re looking for lively beers with a full mouthfeel – a task many alcohol-free beers aren’t up to. We’re also looking for great options beyond the most commonly available styles, such as lager, to give you a wider choice. That said, accessibility is important. Among the craft brews, you’ll also find a number of mainstream beer brands in our list.'

Beaverton Lager Crush IPA has a distinct aroma of tropical fruits. Its taste is well balanced, offsetting its pineapple sweetness with a pleasant bitterness. Beaverton Lager Crush has a light / medium body and a lingering, predominantly sweet aftertaste that becomes increasingly sweet as it gently fades. A well made and entertaining IPA.

Dry/ish review

A difficult beer for the casual drinker to enjoy, perhaps. Technically accomplished brewing, undoubtedly, but unfortunately milk stout is not a style of beer I particularly enjoy. For me this beer has a slightly one dimensional palate of tastes, dominated by a malty, chocolate-y sweetness accompanied by an unexpected and not altogether pleasant smokiness. It lacks the depth and thickness of a conventional alcoholic stout. In contrast to the beer’s taste, the aftertaste is unexpectedly. However, other reviewers rate this beer highly.

Binary Botanicals Aromatic Alcohol Free Table Beer is an unusual beer with a candied fruit and hop aroma. It’s very light bodied indeed, perhaps slightly too thin, and has a surprisingly sweet, hoppy taste and gentle aftertaste. Overall a very straightforward and easy drinking non alcoholic alternative.

Brewdog Lost AF is a non alcohol version of the brewers conventional Lost Lager. Lost AF has a mild aroma with hints of malt. It has a light slightly bitter taste, biscuit with hints of citrus, but unfortunately is a touch thinner than would be ideal. Lost AF has a gentle, slightly bitter aftertaste. A refreshing but not particularly exciting non alcoholic lager that’d probably be enjoyed most by fans of Brewdogs alcoholic Lost Lager.

Brooklyn Special Effects is the first non alcoholic beer from one of the USA's largest craft brewers. A slightly hoppy aroma with a light taste but perhaps a little on the thin side. No stand out bitterness or sweetness and little aftertaste. As its easy to find and often the only choice, if it's all that's available it’s a pleasant-enough option but others are better.

A complex but light aroma blending hops, malt and caramel. A very lightly carbonated beer with a medium bodied, smooth sweet, malty taste balanced by a slight hoppy bitterness. A classic German wheat beer. However watch out for the sugar and calories – not a beer for anyone on a diet!

Tastes like Heineken. A very well executed non-alcoholic version of Heineken, so if you enjoy the conventional alcoholic Heineken but want a non-alcoholic version, or alternatively if you want a ‘safe’ introduction to non alcoholic lagers, then this is highly recommended.

An intense sweet smell that’s reminiscent of overripe fruit. A pleasant-ish but one dimensional fruity taste that (for me) is ruined by its being excessively sweet. The long lasting aftertaste, in contrast, is bitter.
