Top 5 Pale Ale

Dry/ish review

There's no doubt that Adnams Ghost Ship Alcohol Free is a citrus Pale Ale from the first smell - it has an intense citrus aroma, almost (to some palates, perhaps) overwhelming. Tart, bitter taste almost to the point of being sour. Short, bitter (but not unpleasant) aftertaste. No sweetness at all. Not neccessarily to everyone's taste, but if you like the alcoholic version of Adnam’s Ghost Ship or an intensely bitter pale ale then you’ll almost certainly enjoy this.

Top 5 Stout/ Porter/ Dark

Dry/ish review

A difficult beer for the casual drinker to enjoy, perhaps. Technically accomplished brewing, undoubtedly, but unfortunately milk stout is not a style of beer I particularly enjoy. For me this beer has a slightly one dimensional palate of tastes, dominated by a malty, chocolate-y sweetness accompanied by an unexpected and not altogether pleasant smokiness. It lacks the depth and thickness of a conventional alcoholic stout. In contrast to the beer’s taste, the aftertaste is unexpectedly. However, other reviewers rate this beer highly.

Intense citrus aroma and taste

World beer award recipient

Dry/ish review

Big Drop Paradiso Citra IPA gives the first indication of the taste to come with its intense citrus aroma. In the mouth it is light bodied and perhaps slightly thinner than is ideal with a sharply bitter citrus taste. Long lasting but mildly bitter aftertaste. One to drink quickly on a hot day, or after exercise any day.

Smooth and medium bodied - lightly carbonated without any sourness or tartness. No drawbacks and no strong differentiating features. Pleasant enough with a pizza perhaps, and presumably a good substitute for Bira Moretti if that’s your lager of choice.

Biting bitterness, hoppy aroma

Dry/ish review

Very sharp and bitter. An intense, hoppy smell with slight floral hints. The taste almost a shock with a biting bitterness that lingers long into aftertaste. If you like intensely bitter, hoppy beers you’ll really like this. If not, probably better avoided.

Has a light, fruity, hoppy aroma. A medium bodied, bitter hoppy taste with no wateriness, leading into a pleasantly sour aftertaste which fades into sweeter fruitiness as it disappears. Refreshing and definitely more-ish.

Dry/ish review

Brooklyn Special Effects is the first non alcoholic beer from one of the USA's largest craft brewers. A slightly hoppy aroma with a light taste but perhaps a little on the thin side. No stand out bitterness or sweetness and little aftertaste. As its easy to find and often the only choice, if it's all that's available it’s a pleasant-enough option but others are better.

A complex but light aroma blending hops, malt and caramel. A very lightly carbonated beer with a medium bodied, smooth sweet, malty taste balanced by a slight hoppy bitterness. A classic German wheat beer. However watch out for the sugar and calories – not a beer for anyone on a diet!

Tastes like Heineken. A very well executed non-alcoholic version of Heineken, so if you enjoy the conventional alcoholic Heineken but want a non-alcoholic version, or alternatively if you want a ‘safe’ introduction to non alcoholic lagers, then this is highly recommended.

Strong pineapple/ fruit smell. Very light, thin and slightly sweet tropical fruit taste offset with a hint of bitterness. A slightly bitter and short lived aftertaste. Disappointing – tastes like a weak lilt based shandy.
