Top 5 Pale Ale

Dry/ish review

There's no doubt that Adnams Ghost Ship Alcohol Free is a citrus Pale Ale from the first smell - it has an intense citrus aroma, almost (to some palates, perhaps) overwhelming. Tart, bitter taste almost to the point of being sour. Short, bitter (but not unpleasant) aftertaste. No sweetness at all. Not neccessarily to everyone's taste, but if you like the alcoholic version of Adnam’s Ghost Ship or an intensely bitter pale ale then you’ll almost certainly enjoy this.

Dry/ish review

Ambar Tostada has a very gentle, almost imperceptible aroma of toasted malts. It is very light bodied indeed, bordering thin, and tastes very slightly of sweet toasted malt. The beer’s sweetness grows through its aftertaste, becoming almost (but not quite) cloying. Ambar Tostada is not in anyway an unpleasant beer but isn’t very rewarding or pleasurable - there are many equally refreshing but more enjoyable non alcoholic beers available.

Dry/ish review

Beaverton Lager Crush IPA has a distinct aroma of tropical fruits. Its taste is well balanced, offsetting its pineapple sweetness with a pleasant bitterness. Beaverton Lager Crush has a light / medium body and a lingering, predominantly sweet aftertaste that becomes increasingly sweet as it gently fades. A well made and entertaining IPA.

Mild caramel aroma, bitter sweet taste

Dry/ish review

A dark beer with a satisfying malty caramel aroma and taste, which nicely balances its sweetness with a gentle bitterness. However, unfortunately the beer’s taste is somewhat let down by a little thinness – it’s more watery than would be ideal. It leaves a thin, sweetish aftertaste.

Big Drop Brewing Fieldhopper Golden Ale has earthy, honey flavours as a result of using a quintessentially English hop variety, which balance a gentle bitterness with the delicate aroma of orange blossom and grapefruit.

Toasted malts, autumnal spices, subtle bitterness

Dry/ish review

Big Drop’s Firesider Pumpkin Spice is a light, gently bitter and autumnal dark beer. As its name suggests, it has enjoyable hints of pumpkin in its aroma and taste. However aside from pumpkin, its autumnal-ness is boosted by a slightly stronger taste of nutmeg. These combine in any easy drinking and out-of-the-ordinary beer for an autumn or any evening. Pleasantly different

Top 5 Stout/ Porter/ Dark

Dry/ish review

A difficult beer for the casual drinker to enjoy, perhaps. Technically accomplished brewing, undoubtedly, but unfortunately milk stout is not a style of beer I particularly enjoy. For me this beer has a slightly one dimensional palate of tastes, dominated by a malty, chocolate-y sweetness accompanied by an unexpected and not altogether pleasant smokiness. It lacks the depth and thickness of a conventional alcoholic stout. In contrast to the beer’s taste, the aftertaste is unexpectedly. However, other reviewers rate this beer highly.

Dry/ish review

Big Drop Paradiso Citra IPA gives the first indication of the taste to come with its intense citrus aroma. In the mouth it is light bodied and perhaps slightly thinner than is ideal with a sharply bitter citrus taste. Long lasting but mildly bitter aftertaste. One to drink quickly on a hot day, or after exercise any day.

Very dry, with a sharply bitter citrus taste that rolls through into the beer’s aftertaste. A relatively lightly bodied beer, without any of the thinness that can lessen the attractiveness of non-alcoholic beers. Refreshing and well executed, but not particularly differentiated from other pale ales.

Lager

4.2

Malty sweetness balanced by citrus bitterness

Top 5 Lager & Top 30 Beer

Dry/ish review

Big Drop Brewing’s Kodama Lager is an India Pale Lager - a Lager brewed using the same process as IPAs. This process, together with the hops used, produces a Lager that combines some of the tangy, citrus and orange hoppy tastes characteristic of some IPAs with the hints of honey and the light, crisp refreshing body that is more typical of a Lager. Kodama IPL is also slightly more overtly bitter than many Lagers, although is less bitter than most IPAs, and unlike Lagers its bitterness grows (pleasantly) in its aftertaste. Unusual, enjoyable and refreshing.

Binary Botanicals Aromatic Alcohol Free Table Beer is an unusual beer with a candied fruit and hop aroma. Bitburger Drive alcohol free lager has a strange aroma that is both slightly acidic and slightly sweet. Bitburger Drive has a very light, one dimensional and somewhat indeterminate flavour, neither sweet or bitter and no distinct characteristics. Not nasty, but nothing to justifying recommending it over the many other non alcoholic lagers available. Disappointing.

Brewdog Lost AF is a non alcohol version of the brewers conventional Lost Lager. Lost AF has a mild aroma with hints of malt. It has a light slightly bitter taste, biscuit with hints of citrus, but unfortunately is a touch thinner than would be ideal. Lost AF has a gentle, slightly bitter aftertaste. A refreshing but not particularly exciting non alcoholic lager that’d probably be enjoyed most by fans of Brewdogs alcoholic Lost Lager.
