Lager

62 Lagers listed

Lagers typically are light tasting and crisp. They usually do not have complex, strong flavours although some have subtle hints of malt or hops. The majority of lagers are pale coloured. Their light, crisp taste means non-alcoholic versions of lagers are perhaps the most consistently close in style to their alcoholic counterparts - they are less reliant on strong flavours resulting from the creation of alcohol in the brewing process.

Dry/ish review

Brooklyn Special Effects is the first non alcoholic beer from one of the USA's largest craft brewers. A slightly hoppy aroma with a light taste but perhaps a little on the thin side. No stand out bitterness or sweetness and little aftertaste. As its easy to find and often the only choice, if it's all that's available it’s a pleasant-enough option but others are better.

Malty sweetness balanced by citrus bitterness

Top 5 Lager & Top 30 Beer

Dry/ish review

Big Drop Brewing’s Kodama Lager is an India Pale Lager - a Lager brewed using the same process as IPAs. This process, together with the hops used, produces a Lager that combines some of the tangy, citrus and orange hoppy tastes characteristic of some IPAs with the hints of honey and the light, crisp refreshing body that is more typical of a Lager. Kodama IPL is also slightly more overtly bitter than many Lagers, although is less bitter than most IPAs, and unlike Lagers its bitterness grows (pleasantly) in its aftertaste. Unusual, enjoyable and refreshing.

Tastes like Heineken. A very well executed non-alcoholic version of Heineken, so if you enjoy the conventional alcoholic Heineken but want a non-alcoholic version, or alternatively if you want a ‘safe’ introduction to non alcoholic lagers, then this is highly recommended.

Dry/ish review

Insel Skippers Wet Hopped non alcoholic Pilsner has a light aroma with gentle hints of toast and ripe fruit, perhaps orange. Very dry in the mouth, with its well balanced, mild taste giving way to a straightforwardly intense (for pilsner) bitterness which extends Into the long but not unpleasantly bitter aftertaste. A little one dimensional, but slightly unusual and unexpected so worth a try.
