Stout/ Porter/ Dark

18 Sout/ Porter/ Dark beers listed

Stouts, Porters and Dark beers include a wide range of deep brown to black beers that tend to be smooth, sweet and have little if any bitterness (or balance sweetness and bitterness). They often taste of caramel, coffee or chocolate and some can have hints of smoke. There are a small number of non-alcoholic stouts available and this reflects the difficulties brewers face when trying to replicate the complex flavours in alcoholic dark beers. Perhaps the most challenging non-alcoholic beer style.

Creamy, roasted malts and coconut

Top 5 Stout/ Porter/ Dark

Dry/ish review

Big Drop Arctic Beach Coconut Stout is a pleasant enough non alcoholic stout. Subtle but distinct aroma and taste of coconut complements the main other element of the non alcoholic stout, the malts nicely, alongside hints of chocolate in the background. However like many non alcoholic stouts is a little thin and it lacks the velvety feel of an alcoholic version (despite its claims) and feels slightly over carbonated on the tongue. Fun and definitely worth trying

This pours like black silk. The soft and smooth aroma of vanilla seductively combines with a decadent chocolate flavour — all perfectly balanced with dark cherry undertones, reminiscent of Black Forest Gateau. This is a beer to take your time over.

Combines chocolate, malt and coffee

Top 5 Stout/ Porter/ Dark

Dry/ish review

Nittenauer Lola Coffee Porter as might be expected has an aroma of malt and coffee. Sweet malts and caramel are definitely at the fore when tasting it, along with a definite backdrop of coffee that emerges more fully in the aftertaste and lingers. Nittenauer Lola is light bodied, maybe a little thin and perhaps a touch over carbonated. In general Dryish is not a big fan of Porters, but if you enjoy the style you’ll probably enjoy this. One thing to note is that it is quite high in calories.

Top 5 Stout/ Porter/ Dark

Dry/ish review

A difficult beer for the casual drinker to enjoy, perhaps. Technically accomplished brewing, undoubtedly, but unfortunately milk stout is not a style of beer I particularly enjoy. For me this beer has a slightly one dimensional palate of tastes, dominated by a malty, chocolate-y sweetness accompanied by an unexpected and not altogether pleasant smokiness. It lacks the depth and thickness of a conventional alcoholic stout. In contrast to the beer’s taste, the aftertaste is unexpectedly. However, other reviewers rate this beer highly.

Dry/ish review

Drop Bear Bonfire Stout first makes its presence known with a gentle but distinct aroma of sweetened coffee, which this stout’s taste combines with burnt caramel and dark, bitter chocolate in its moderately smooth, medium body. The bitter chocolate taste builds and dominates the aftertaste. Definitely worth a try if you enjoy non alcoholic stouts.

Caramel/ dark chocolate smell. Sweet Burnt toffee taste, but slightly thin as though the beer is lightly carbonated water with added essence of porter. Not unpleasant, but probably not a good introduction to this style. So perhaps steer clear unless you you’re a fan of porter.

Flat white coffee styled stout

Dry/ish review

Beer Geek Flat White Stout is Mikkeller’s take on a non alcoholic stout. As you’d expect from its name there’s no doubt from the first sniff that coffee is a key element of this beer, from the gentle hint of coffee in the aroma to the taste of coffee underpinning the stout’s flavour. However all is not quite as it seems; aside from coffee, Beer Geek’s taste is unexpectedly sharp with citrus-like tanginess. It’s also slightly more carbonated than might expected.

Dry/ish review

A slightly ‘in-your-face’ unsubtle malty, chocolate aroma. Disappointingly thin, with a ‘malt essence’ flavour dominating the taste, albeit alongside hints of chocolate. There are not many non-alcoholic stouts, and this shows how difficult they are to get right.

Traditional irish stout, chocolate, coffee

This old school classic pours in the manner of a traditional dry Irish stout, presenting a beautiful soft, creamy, caramel coloured head. The aroma will prepare you for a journey, starting with the bold bittersweet chocolate, before progressing through to a rich roasted coffee finish.

Smooth with roasted peanuts and biscuit aroma

Dry/ish review

Hammerton's Crunch AF is an alcohol free version of its successful conventional Peanut Butter Milk Stout. It has a surprisingly intense burnt sweet vanilla aroma, and a taste combines a touch of bitterness with caramel and hints of peanut butter, but which is disappointingly thinness. The peanut butter really kicks in with the aftertaste. A curiosity.
